Early Deficit Costs Broncos in Road Loss at Cal State Monterey Bay

SEASIDE, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona dropped a 97-80 road decision to Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday afternoon, falling to 12-10 overall and 7-9 in CCAA play. A difficult first half proved too much to overcome, as the Broncos were unable to fully recover despite improved second-half play.

The opening half swung heavily in Monterey Bay's favor after the early exchanges. Cal Poly Pomona connected from the perimeter early, but turnovers and missed defensive assignments allowed the Otters to build momentum. Monterey Bay capitalized with transition baskets and second-chance points, closing the half on a decisive run to take a 52-29 lead into the break.

Coming out of halftime, the Broncos responded with more offensive rhythm, shooting with greater efficiency and finding success from beyond the arc. CPP leaned on ball movement and perimeter shooting to chip away at the deficit, cutting the margin to under 20 points during several stretches of the second half. However, each push was met with timely shot-making from Monterey Bay, preventing any sustained comeback.
