Broncos Hold On For Doubleheader Split With Mavericks

POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona baseball split their Saturday doubleheader with Colorado Mesa at Scolinos Field on Saturday, losing the first game by a score of 8-0 then winning the nightcap by a score of 8-5. With the win and the loss, the Broncos are now 5-1 to open the 2026 season.

Game 1: CPP 0, CMU 8
Despite solid efforts throughout the lineup, the Broncos were unable to generate offensive momentum against a deep Maverick pitching staff, resulting in the team's first loss of the season in the first game of the doubleheader.

Colorado Mesa struck early, plating two runs in the first inning and breaking the game open with a four-run second that included three hits, two of them being doubles. The Mavericks' offense added two more runs in the eighth with a home run to left field, the first home run hit at Scolinos Field this season.

While CPP's offense was held scoreless, several Broncos made contributions on the box score. Jack Sanders led the team with two of the squad's six hits, while freshman Justin Yeutter collected his first collegiate hit with a double down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth. The top of the order also collected a hit a piece, coming off the bats of Daniel Ruiz, Julian Angulo and Ashton Romero.

On the mound, Matt Lorenzano worked five innings in his second start, surrendering six earned runs while striking out three on 80 pitches. Relievers Zack Bauer and Anthony Jojola each made their CPP debut out of the pen, combining for the final 4.0 innings.

Game 2: CPP 8, CMU 5
In the nightcap of the doubleheader, the Bronco bats came alive to deliver eight runs on 11 hits, helping CPP defeat Colorado Mesa 8-5 for their fifth win of the season.

After Colorado Mesa scratched across a run in the first, the Broncos responded quickly with a multi-run rally in the second inning. Diego Murillo got things started with an RBI double to left center field scoring Tyler Blade, and Dominic Porter scored on a ground out from Bryan Richmand to take the lead. Evan Nahra and Sebastian Arguelles followed with back-to-back RBI hits in the third, extending CPP's lead to 4-1 in the game. The Broncos' offense kept the pressure on in the fifth, highlighted by Tyler Blade's bases-clearing double down the right field line, and a Murillo two-out double to extend the game to 8-1.

On the mound, Matthew Leyva earned the win in his first start of the season, delivering 4.1 innings while allowing just one earned run on 71 pitches. Senior relief pitcher Colt Tucker made his season debut out of the pen, going 1.2 scoreless innings and not allowing a hit.

Colorado Mesa mounted a seventh-inning rally, scoring four runs with no outs and putting the tying run on deck. Rex Jarcy came in to shut the door, and he did just that. After issuing a walk to load the bases, Jarcy struck out the next batter on a full count. Then after allowing another walk, the Tustin native struck out the final two batters of the game, the latter on a pitch clock violation, to pick up his first career save and guarantee the Broncos at least a series split with No. 7 Colorado Mesa.
