Broncos Fight Off APU in Final Minute to Advance to Regional Semifinals

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball rallied late and delivered in the final seconds to secure a 56-54 victory over Azusa Pacific in the NCAA West Regional Quarterfinals on Friday afternoon. The win marked the program's first NCAA Tournament victory since the regional semifinals on March 14, 2015.

The No. 3 seeded Broncos improved to 27-4 on the season after overcoming an early deficit and scoring key buckets down the stretch. Azusa Pacific opened the game with momentum and built a 10-point lead midway through the second quarter, but Cal Poly Pomona responded with a strong run to regain a one-point lead by halftime. Sydney Nelson sparked the comeback, scoring eight of her game-high 19 points in the first half, including a pair of late baskets that gave the Broncos a 31-30 lead at the break.

The Cougars reclaimed the lead in the third quarter, going up 42-39 into the final period. Cal Poly Pomona answered with defensive stops and strong work on the glass, led by Hunter Hudson, who contributed a dominant performance down low with 17 rebounds and eight points. The Broncos opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run to briefly seize control before the two squads traded baskets throughout the closing minutes.

With the Broncos trailing by one inside the final 10 seconds, Brielle Minor delivered the moment of the game. After forcing a turnover, Minor raced down the floor for a go-ahead layup with nine seconds remaining to put Cal Poly Pomona in front 55-54. Alexis Woodson added a free throw moments later to extend the lead to two, and the Broncos held off a final Azusa Pacific scoring attempt to seal the win.

Nelson led the Broncos with 19 points, while Hudson controlled the paint with 17 rebounds and Woodson added 12 of her own. Andrea Stajic contributed 10 points, and Minor finished with 12 assists to guide the offense.
