Lorenzano Shines as Broncos Take Series From Chico State

POMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona baseball took the series from Chico State on Sunday afternoon, winning the finale by a score of 6-2. With the win, the first-place Broncos remain atop the CCAA standings with a 7-1 conference record while improving to 15-7 overall.

The Broncos struck early and controlled the game behind timely hitting and a dominant start on the mound. Julian Angulo jumpstarted the offense in the bottom of the second inning, launching a solo home run to left-center, his third of the season, to put Cal Poly Pomona on the board. Later in the inning, Evan Nahra delivered an RBI double to right center that brought Bryan Richman home and extended the Bronco lead to 2-0.

The Green & Gold continued to build momentum in the middle innings. In the fourth, Richman singled and stole second, later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Gage Gonzales to push the lead to three. The Broncos broke the game open in the fifth inning with a three-run frame. Tyler Blade drove in a run with a single to right field before Richman produced an RBI on a fielder's choice. Nahra followed with a bases-loaded walk to cap the inning and give the Broncos a commanding 6-0 lead.

Senior Matt Lorenzano turned in an outstanding performance on the mound, tossing seven shutout innings while allowing just three hits and striking out seven to earn the win. In the top of the fourth inning with bases loaded and no outs, Lorenzano made the play of the year with a behind-the-back grab that resulted in a double play. The next batter would ground out to second base, escaping the bases loaded threat with no runs allowed.

The Broncos bullpen closed the door late, with Colt Tucker and Sean Suriyaniel helping finish the game after Chico State scored two runs in the eighth. Richman, Nahra, and Austin Duarte each collected two hits to lead the offense. Cal Poly Pomona finished with 10 hits and played clean defense, committing just one error in the entire series.
