Vasquez Tosses Complete Game Shutout Against Chico State

POMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona baseball split their doubleheader with Chico State on Saturday, improving to 14-7 on the season and 6-1 in CCAA play. They currently hold a one-game lead over Cal State Monterey Bay in the conference standings.

Game 1: CPP 1, CHICO 2
The Wildcats struck first in the second inning, taking advantage of a defensive miscue before an RBI single down the right-field line brought home the first run of the game. Cal Poly Pomona responded in the fourth inning by loading the bases and capitalizing on a patient approach at the plate. Bryan Richman drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Julian Angulo, evening the game at 1-1.

Chico State reclaimed the lead in the sixth on another run-scoring single to left field, giving the Wildcats a 2-1 advantage that ultimately held up as the decisive moment.

On the mound, Matthew Leyva delivered a strong start for the Broncos, allowing just one unearned run on three hits while striking out four across five innings. Anthony Cosme worked the final four frames in relief and recorded four strikeouts while allowing one run.

At the plate, Angulo, Tyler Blade, Justin Yeutter, Jack Sanders, and Daniel Ruiz each collected hits for the Broncos, with Yeutter's ninth-inning double giving Cal Poly Pomona a late opportunity before Chico State closed out the game.

Game 2: CPP 4, CHICO 0
After three scoreless innings, the Broncos broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Daniel Ruiz drew a leadoff walk to spark the rally before Jack Sanders delivered an RBI double to left center to put Cal Poly Pomona on the board. Later in the inning, Bryan Richman came through with a clutch two-run double to right center, scoring Sanders and Austin Duarte to extend the Bronco lead to 3-0.

Cal Poly Pomona added an insurance run in the sixth when Dominic Porter and Tyler Blade executed aggressive baserunning, pulling off a double steal that resulted in a throwing error that allowed Porter to come home for the final run of the game.

On the mound, Anthony Vasquez turned in a stellar performance, tossing a complete-game shutout. The right-hander scattered seven hits across seven innings while striking out four and allowing just one free pass to secure his first win of the season. The outing also marked a career-high in innings pitched for the junior right hander.

Blade collected two hits in the win, while Sanders and Richman each recorded the key doubles in the fourth that fueled the decisive three-run rally. The Broncos' pitching and defense held Chico State scoreless despite being outhit seven to four.
