TURLOCK, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona baseball erased an early deficit and got the tying run on base in the ninth inning, but ultimately fell 9-8 to Stanislaus State on Sunday afternoon at Warrior Baseball Field. Despite the series loss, the Broncos still remain in second place in the CCAA standings behind just Cal State Monterey Bay, owning an overall record of 16-10 and 8-4 in conference play.
After falling behind 6-0 through the first two innings, the Broncos steadily chipped away and put together a competitive offensive showing with 10 hits. Cal Poly Pomona broke through in the third before capitalizing on three defensive errors by the Warriors in the fourth to plate two unearned runs and cut the lead to 6-3.
Bronco catcher
Evan Nahra capped his monster weekend at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance, with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. Nahra finishes the series with a blistering .615 average (8-for-13) with two doubles, two home runs, six runs scored, six RBI, and two stolen bases.
In the top of the fifth, Nahra singled through the right side to bring home
Julian Angulo, then hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth. Trailing 9-5 entering the ninth, Cal Poly Pomona mounted one final push, scoring three runs on three hits to put the tying run on base. However, the Warriors were able to secure the final out on a groundout to shortstop to hold on for the win.
Angulo added a key contribution in the middle of the lineup, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while
Jack Sanders recorded a pair of hits and scored once.
Daniel Ruiz also crossed the plate twice to help fuel the comeback effort.
On the mound,
Matt Lorenzano made the start and went 5.0 innings, allowing seven runs on 11 hits while striking out five without issuing a walk.
Rex Jarcy followed in relief, tossing 1.1 innings and surrendering two runs on two hits with a pair of walks and two strikeouts.
Sean Suriyaniel delivered 1.2 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out one to keep the Broncos within striking distance late.
