Broncos Slug Their Way Back Into First Place With 24-Run Outburst

POMONA, Calif. – The Broncos swept their conference doubleheader against Cal State East Bay on Friday afternoon at Scolinos Field, improving to 22-14 overall and 14-8 in CCAA play to reclaim first place in the CCAA standings. Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State Monterey Bay have been flip-flopping with one another for the top of the conference standings over the past few weeks, and with Friday's results the Broncos are once again at the top.

Game 1: CPP 24, CSUEB 5
Cal Poly Pomona unleashed its most explosive offensive performance of the season in the series opener, overwhelming Cal State East Bay 24-5 behind a relentless offense that produced 26 hits – marking the second-most runs and second-most hits ever recorded during the Randy Betten era (2011-now). The team's 24 RBI also ties the most in a game in that span.

After a quiet start through the first two innings, the Broncos began to find their rhythm in the third, plating a pair of runs on three hits to take an early 2-1 lead. That momentum carried into the middle innings, where CPP broke the game wide open. The Broncos scored five runs in the fifth inning, capitalizing on five hits and an error before erupting for seven runs in the sixth and another seven in the seventh to completely separate from the Pioneers.

Leading the offensive surge was Jack Sanders, who delivered a clutch performance with three hits, including a grand slam, while driving in seven runs. An impressive six Broncos recorded three or more hits in the contest, with Bryan Richman and Diego Murillo each contributing four. Arturo Rodriguez came through in a big moment with a bases-clearing double, capping the Broncos' incredible scoring effort.

In total, each of the Broncos' nine starters collected at least one hit in the game, recording seven extra base hits and finishing with 24 runs. The team's 26 hits are the most by any CCAA team since February of 2024. Shockingly, the Broncos' 24 runs only ranks third-most in a game in the CCAA this season, as Cal State San Bernardino had a pair of performances with 29 and 25 runs scored.

On the mound, CPP pitching staff managed traffic effectively despite East Bay getting on base 14 times. Starting pitcher Andrew Campbell picked up his CCAA-leading eighth win of the season, going 6.0 innings and allowing four runs to score with four strikeouts and zero walks. Gavin Smith and Andrew Dusablon made appearances out of the pen, holding CSUEB to just one run over the final three frames.

Game 2: CPP 5, CSUEB 1
Cal Poly Pomona carried its momentum into the second game of the doubleheader, using a balanced effort on both sides of the ball with a 5-1 win in the seven-inning nightcap.

After two scoreless innings to begin the game, the Pioneers got on the board first with an RBI single in the third. The Broncos immediately responded, plating one on a sacrifice fly by Julian Angulo to center field to even the game at 1-1.

However, the game was decided in the fourth inning, when Evan Nahra and Sebastian Arguelles each belted no doubt home runs into the trees beyond the left field fence. Sanders quickly followed with a two-run double to right center field, giving CPP a 5-1 lead on five unanswered runs.

On the mound, CPP delivered a dominant performance, limiting the Pioneers to just one run on three hits. Hauze Fragoso and Matt Lorenzano struck out seven and allowed just one walk, keeping East Bay off balance all evening. Lorenzano delivered a near-perfect outing from the pen, only issuing one walk and a hit by pitch without allowing any hits, runs, and adding six punch outs.

The combination of timely big swings and strong pitching allowed Cal Poly Pomona to take both games of the doubleheader – the first time they have done so since their series sweep against Cal State San Bernardino.
