Baseball Secures Series Win Against East Bay, Ramos Inducted into HOF

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team split their CCAA doubleheader with Cal State East Bay on Saturday afternoon at Scolinos Field, moving to 23-15 overall while dropping to second place in the conference with a 15-9 CCAA record. The CCAA has proven to be extremely competitive this season - with seven of the nine teams owning win percentages at or above .500 this season.

Before the game, the Cal Poly Pomona Athletics Department inducted five individuals and one team into the CPP Athletics Hall of Fame as the Class of 2026. One of those individuals was longtime baseball assistant coach Jimmy Ramos, who is currently in his 43rd season coaching with the program. Following the ceremony, each of the inductees threw out a ceremonial first pitch before the game.

Game 1: CPP 7, CSUEB 4
The Broncos wasted no time jumping in front, erupting for four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Daniel Ruiz set the tone with a three-hit performance at the top of the order, while Bryan Richman contributed a sacrifice fly and Tyler Blade singled to bring home two runs. Sebastian Arguelles then singled to left center, bringing home two more to extend the early lead to 4-0.

On the mound, reigning NCBWA West Region Pitcher of the Week Anthony Vasquez delivered a quality start, going 6.0 innings and only allowing one run while striking out five. The right-hander limited damage across the middle innings and worked efficiently despite some traffic on the bases with six hits allowed.

East Bay chipped away with single runs in the second and eighth innings before plating two in the ninth, but the Broncos responded with key insurance in the eighth. Richman, Arguelles, and Diego Murillo each reached base, before catcher Ashton Romero drove home two runs with a double down the left field line. Jack Sanders then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, extending the lead to 7-2.

The Pioneers added two in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback – allowing CPP to claim the series win.

Game 2: CPP 4, CSUEB 6
Cal Poly Pomona battled back early but could not overcome a decisive middle inning, falling 6-4 to Cal State East Bay in the nightcap.

The Pioneers struck first with two runs in the top of the first on three hits. The Broncos answered in the second, capitalizing on a costly defensive miscue and an Arguelles double to plate three runs to briefly regain the lead.

However, East Bay tied the game in the third, then regained control in the fifth inning, pushing across three runs on two hits to go up 6-3. The Broncos pitching staff issued eight walks in the game, allowing the Pioneers to create scoring opportunities and sustain pressure offensively.

CPP added a run in the sixth to cut the deficit to two, but struggled to capitalize on multiple scoring opportunities late to leave eight runners on base. The Broncos were limited to just four hits in the game, with Austin Duarte having two.

Matthew Leyva got the start for the Broncos, going 5.0 innings while allowing all six earned runs and taking the loss. Out of the bullpen, the Broncos received strong efforts from freshmen Rex Jarcy and Gavin Smith, who each tossed 2.0 scoreless innings with a combined one hit allowed.

The split keeps the Broncos firmly in the conference race as they look to carry momentum into the final eight games of conference play.

Up Next
The Broncos will head on the road for the next two weekends with a series at Cal State LA followed by a non-conference series at Westmont. The Golden Eagles and Warriors are among the top teams in the West region, meaning both series could have significant regional ranking implications as the Broncos eye a return to the NCAA Tournament next month.
