Broncos Outlast Golden Eagles in Friday Slugfest

LOS ANGELES – Cal Poly Pomona baseball outlasted Cal State LA in a high-scoring battle on Friday evening, securing an 11-10 victory at Reeder Field to open the conference series. The Broncos (24-15, 16-9 CCAA) overcame a persistent Golden Eagles offense, finishing with 14 hits and six extra-base knocks in the win.

Cal Poly Pomona struck early with a solo home run from Jack Sanders in the first, before adding two more in the third on a second Sanders home run. The two long balls mark the redshirt senior's 11th and 12th home runs of the season, but more importantly, bring his career total to 27 – tying Nic Hernandez (2016-19) for sixth on the all-time list. Sanders is now seven home runs away from making a run at the program record, a total of 34 held by current Associate Head Coach Jenzen Torres.

After Cal State LA responded and briefly closed the gap, the Broncos gained critical separation in the fifth inning. The Broncos managed just two hits in the frame, but plated five runs thanks in large part to a bases clearing double from Bryan Richman.

Daniel Ruiz added a strong showing at the top of the lineup, collecting three hits and driving in a run, while Sebastian Casillas also recorded three hits and scored three times to keep the offense moving.

Additional contributions came from Tyler Blade, who added insurance in the top of the ninth with a home run. Sebastian Arguelles chipped in with a pair of doubles as part of the Broncos' balanced offensive approach.

On the mound, Andrew Campbell earned his CCAA-leading ninth win after working five innings, striking out four. The Broncos bullpen proved pivotal down the stretch, with Geo Hernandez delivering two scoreless innings in relief to stabilize the game. Gavin Smith bridged the late innings before Sean Suriyaniel closed the door to earn his third save despite late pressure from the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA mounted a late push, scoring runs in the eighth and ninth innings to tighten the margin, but the Broncos held on to secure the one-run victory.
