Cosme Deals, Broncos Drop Series Finale in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES - Cal Poly Pomona ran into some early trouble in the second inning, ultimately resulting in a 7-4 loss to Cal State LA in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 25-17 on the season and 17-11 in conference, as they hold steady at second place in the CCAA standings.

The Golden Eagles came out swinging, plating seven runs in the first two innings thanks to six hits and two errors by the Bronco defense. Cal Poly Pomona responded quickly in the top of the third with a Daniel Ruiz triple down the right field line, his first of the season, followed by a Julian Angulo sacrifice fly to bring the game back to 7-3.

The Bronco offense didn't do much for the remainder of the game, only collecting four more hits including a solo home run by Evan Nahra in the top of the eighth inning to cap the scoring. Cal Poly Pomona finished with seven hits on the day, including multi-hit games from Angulo, Tyler Blade, and Nahra.

On the mound, seven runs came around to score on starter Matthew Leyva, despite only one of them being earned. Leyva recorded three strikeouts and six hits allowed in his two innings of work. Anthony Cosme was dominant out of the pen, going 6.0 scoreless innings while only allowing two hits and punching out six. Cosme has been lights out so far this season, currently sporting a 1.93 ERA with 33 strikeouts to just seven walks allowed across 28.0 innings.
