SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona used timely hitting and a strong veteran effort on the mound to secure a 3-2 win over Westmont in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Russell Carr Field. With the win, the Broncos improve 26-17 on the season and 9-6 in non-conference games.
Â
After falling behind early on a first-inning solo home run, the Broncos settled in and relied on their pitching staff to keep the game within reach. Starter
Matt Lorenzano delivered a quality start, working 6.0 innings while allowing just one run and striking out six to keep Westmont from extending its lead despite steady traffic on the bases. Lorenzano continues to lead the conference with 69 strikeouts this season.
Â
Cal Poly Pomona broke through in the sixth inning, thanks to a leadoff home run from
Diego Murillo to tie the game at 1-1. It was the redshirt senior's first home run as a Bronco, and his fifth extra-base hit of the season.
Jack Sanders reached base via an error and subsequently stole second base. A few batters later,
Tyler Blade singled through the left side to score Sanders and give the Broncos a 2-1 lead.
Â
Another solo home run by the Warrior offense would tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, relief pitcher
Andrew Campbell's only mistake of the game. Campbell went 3.0 innings in relief, striking out four while allowing just two hits and the solo home run. He would go on to pick up his 10
th win of the year, which is tied for the most in all of NCAA Division II this season.
Â
The Broncos would claim the final lead of the game in the top of the eighth inning on some Westmont defensive miscues. Sanders singled up the middle, stole second, reached third on a throwing error, then scored on a wild pitch – all during
Julian Angulo's at-bat – to go ahead 3-2 in the game.
Â
Offensively, Cal Poly Pomona was efficient with limited opportunities, tying a season-low four hits. The team is just 4-7 when collecting less than seven hits in a game this season.
