Broncos Celebrate 14 Seniors Before Series Opener

POMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona baseball fell to Cal State San Marcos in a tight series opener at Scolinos Field, falling by a score of 4-3. With the loss, the Broncos and Cougars are now tied for second place in the CCAA standings.

Before the game, the team honored 13 players and one student coach: Cody Betten, Diego Murillo, Matt Lorenzano, Jameson Ferraro, Hauze Fragoso, Andrew Dusablon, Zack Bauer, Gage Gonzales, Colt Tucker, Sebastian Arguelles, Dominic Porter, Jack Sanders, Dylan Esquival, and Andrew Campbell.

The Broncos got on the board early, manufacturing a pair of runs through the first three innings. Austin Duarte singled home Jack Sanders in the first to take a 1-0 lead, then Evan Nahra singled home Sanders again in the third inning to go up 2-0.

San Marcos responded in the sixth and seventh, regaining the lead with three runs on five hits in those two innings. They added an insurance in the top of the ninth, which proved to be crucial as the Broncos brought the game back within one in the bottom of the inning.

Bryan Richman contributed offensively with a multi-hit day, going 2-for-4, as Cal Poly Pomona collected six hits.

On the mound, Andrew Campbell turned in a strong start, working 6.2 innings while allowing three runs, only one earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts. The senior right-hander kept the Cougars navigated through some challenging innings, before Geo Hernandez provided relief out of the bullpen, tossing the final 2.1 innings.

Defensively, the Broncos were solid in stretches, highlighted by Richman's work at second base, but a key error in the seventh inning opened the door for Cal State San Marcos and proved to be a turning point in the game.
