POMONA, Calif. - The Broncos split their CCAA doubleheader against Cal State San Marcos on Friday at Scolinos Field, moving to 28-20 overall while the two teams are tied for second place in the CCAA standings with an 18-13 conference record. Tomorrow's regular season finale will determine the seeding of the upcoming CCAA Tournament, with the Broncos and Cougars already knowing they are set for a rematch on Thursday next week.
Â
Game 1: CPP 6, CSUSM 13
A costly seventh inning flipped what was otherwise a competitive opener to the doubleheader, seeing Cal State San Marcos claim the 13-6 win on an eight-run outburst.
Â
The Broncos plated two in the bottom of the first inning on a
Julian Angulo single to left field and a sacrifice fly from
Tyler Blade to go up 2-0. San Marcos evened the game in the third, but the Broncos quickly responded again with two in the bottom of the frame thanks to RBI singles from Blade and
Diego Murillo. Murillo, a senior shortstop out of San Luis Obispo, finished the day with an impressive six hits across the two games.
Â
CPP added on in the bottom of the sixth with a Duarte RBI double to score Angulo, going up 5-2. However, an eight-run seventh inning from the Cougars put the game well out of reach, and a three-run ninth inning sealed the win.
Â
Starting pitcher
Anthony Vasquez started with six quality innings on the mound, allowing just two earned runs up until the seventh. The Cougars then plated eight runs in the seventh off of five hits, including a three run home run to give big separation.
Rex Jarcy came on in relief, not allowing a run in 1.2 innings of work with two strikeouts. Â Â
Â
The offense as a whole left 14 men on base, failing to capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities.
Â
Game 2: CPP 7, CSUSM 6
The Broncos responded in game two with a resilient 7-6 victory, relying on timely hitting and key pitching down the stretch to secure the doubleheader split.
Â
San Marcos once again jumped out early, plating two runs in the first. Cal Poly Pomona responded in the third, thanks to an RBI double from
Jack Sanders and an RBI single from Duarte. The offense then scored three more in the fourth, coming from three consecutive batters with a sacrifice fly from
Daniel Ruiz, an RBI single from Sanders, and an RBI single from Angulo to go up 5-2.
Â
CSUSM once again fought back in the fifth, plating four runs to go up 6-5. However, the Broncos did not back down, as
Julian Angulo sliced a ball down the right field line to score two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim the 7-6 lead.
Anthony Cosme picked up the win on the mound, going 6.0 innings while punching out four and allowing five earned runs on 93 pitches.
Gavin Smith tossed a scoreless seventh inning, picking up his first career save.
