Pole Vault, Distance, and Relays Power Broncos’ Four-Meet Weekend

POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field pieced together a strong weekend across four meets in Northern and Southern California, highlighted by four NCAA Division II qualifying marks and 12 personal bests.
 
At the Stanford Invitational, the Broncos showcased their strength in the field and sprint groups. Jered Beasley led the way with an NCAA Division II qualifying clearance of 4.95 meters in the pole vault to finish second, while teammates Ian Strode and Gavin Hanes added matching 4.80-meter efforts for third and fourth place.
 
Freshman Harry Chen placed third in the high jump at 1.97 meters and later doubled back with a fifth-place hurdles performance at the Brutus Hamilton Invite. On the track, Konnor Handy anchored a deep 400-meter group with a 48.45, supported closely by Khalil Watson and Jordan Crowdus. Dylan Hanvey and Ekene Onwaeze also posted solid sprint efforts in the 100-meter preliminaries, at 10.80 and 10.81 respectively.
 
Distance runners made their mark at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational and Mike Fanelli Track Classic. Ricardo Vargas and Juan Ramos each hit NCAA Division II standards in the 5,000 meters, running 14:08.62 and 14:11.52, while also moving into fourth and fifth place all time for CPP in the event. Freshman Trajan Cephas led the 800-meter group at UCSD, while Nathaniel Sackett paced a seventh-place finish in the 1,500 meters. In the throws, freshman Omar Soufi placed second in the shot put with a mark of 16.06 meters, entering the Top 10 record book.
 
The Broncos closed the weekend at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational with one of their most complete team performances. Gavin Binning placed fourth in the 200 meters (21.62) after running 10.89 in the 100, while Handy returned to place fourth in the 400 (48.19). The 4x400 relay squad posted an NCAA Division II qualifying time of 3:13.67, and the 4x100 relay added a third-place finish.
