POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona baseball battled through the early innings, but ultimately fell to Cal State San Marcos, 8-3, in the 2026 regular season finale on Saturday at Scolinos Field. With the loss, the Broncos are now 28-21 overall and 18-14 in conference, placing third in the CCAA standings.

Before the game, the team celebrated the 50-year anniversary of the 1976 national championship team. The 1976 squad won the first national title in CPP Athletics history, going 40-27-1 while also winning the first CCAA title in program history. They were later inducted into the CPP Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018.

The Broncos found themselves in a scoreless duel through the first three innings before breaking through in the fourth.
Bryan Richman tripled down the right field line to score
Julian Angulo for the game's first run, followed by a single up the middle off the bat of
Daniel Ruiz to go up 2-0.

Cal State San Marcos responded in the fifth inning, stringing together some hits and a two-run home run to take the 3-2 lead. The Cougars added another run in the sixth, extending their lead to 4-2.

The Broncos remained within striking distance in the eighth inning, manufacturing a run with a
Jack Sanders sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 4-3. However, San Marcos delivered the decisive blow in the ninth, erupting for four runs to secure the win.

Offensively, the Broncos collected just five hits in the game, including extra base hits from
Austin Duarte and Richman.
Matthew Leyva went 6.0 innings starting on the mound, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and punching out three.
Matt Lorenzano followed with 3.0 innings in relief, also allowing four earned runs with three strikeouts. Lorenzano finishes the regular season as the CCAA's strikeout leader with 72 on the season.

rd time in program history.
