Volleyball Falls 3-1 to CUI in Home Opener

POMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona suffered its first loss of the season Saturday, falling to Concordia Irvine 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 20-25, 25-19) at Kellogg Arena. The Broncos moved to 3-1, while the Golden Eagles improved to 3-1.
 
Sarah Ybarra led CPP with 12 kills on a .310 hitting percentage, two service aces and five digs. Charlotte Koerber added nine kills and a team-high 15 digs, while Elle Walker produced eight kills on .300 hitting. Alexia Athans recorded seven kills on 11 swings for a team-best .455 hitting percentage.
 
Ybarra and Koerber were each named to the Yotes Classic Showcase All-Tournament Team, marking Ybarra's second time receiving the honor after delivering 65 kills and a .313 attack percentage back in 2024.
 
Lexi Zammit directed the offense with 32 assists and four digs, ranking second in the CCAA with 9.62 assists per set. Addi Knight contributed seven kills and three blocks, while Renee Nachtigall collected 11 digs.
 
After trailing 20-16 in the opening set, the Broncos mounted a 5-1 run highlighted by kills from Athans and Ybarra and a block by Knight and Koerber. The surge pulled CPP even at 21, but CUI responded with four consecutive points to secure the set.
 
CPP overcame an early three-point deficit in the second frame and took a 6-4 lead behind consecutive kills from Koerber and freshman Paige Bowyer. The Golden Eagles answered with a 9-1 run and later extended their advantage to 19-12. The Broncos fought back within two at 21-19 following Bronwyn Rowse's ace and a block by Zammit and Athans, but CUI closed out the set.
 
The Broncos broke through in the third, using a 7-1 run to build a 14-8 advantage. Ybarra powered the rally with two kills and back-to-back aces, while Knight supplied a block. CPP stretched its lead to 21-14 and forced a fourth set on Knight's kill.
 
CUI seized control of the finale with an early 10-5 lead. CPP later used consecutive blocks involving Walker to cut the deficit to 21-15, but the Golden Eagles held off the comeback to finish the match.
 
 
Up Next
The Broncos will host a nine-match tournament next weekend, with three games taking place on Thursday, three on Friday, and three on Saturday. The Broncos' first game of the Bronco Classic will be against Central Washington on Thursday, September 3rd, at 5:00 PM.
