Broncos Fall to No. 1 Cal State LA in CCAA Opener

LOS ANGELES, Calif.  – Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer held No. 1 Cal State LA scoreless through the opening half before falling 3-0 in its CCAA opener Thursday night at University Stadium.

Goalkeeper Jack Chapman anchored the Broncos defensively, finishing with six saves. He made four first-half stops to keep the nationally ranked Golden Eagles scoreless entering halftime.

CPP generated its best first-half opportunity in the 32nd minute. Nico Sanchez had an attempt blocked before placing a follow-up shot on goal, forcing a save. Daniel Gutierrez added an effort in the 42nd minute as the teams entered halftime with no score.

Cal State LA broke through in the 51st minute, scoring off a two-assist sequence to take a 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles doubled their advantage with an unassisted goal in the 58th minute before completing the scoring with an assisted strike in the 84th.

The Broncos continued applying pressure after halftime, recording five shots and earning both of their corner kicks. Victor Casillas and Jose Garcia each forced saves early in the period, while Sanchez placed another attempt on target in the 77th minute. Clement Badger and Aleksandar Somov also contributed second-half shots.

Sanchez led CPP with three shots and two attempts on goal. Garcia finished with two shots, while Casillas recorded one on target. Chapman added two more saves following halftime, helping the Broncos remain within striking distance for much of the match. CPP finished with nine shots, placing four on goal.

The Broncos return to action next Friday against UC Merced at home at 7 PM.
