No. 14 Broncos Rally Past Cal State LA in Five-Set Thriller

POMONA, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Cal State LA, 3-2 (25-18, 23-25, 20-25, 25-13, 15-12), Thursday night at Kellogg Arena. With the victory, the Broncos improved to 11-1 overall while remaining at 4-0 in CCAA play.
 
No. 14 ranked Cal Poly Pomona controlled the opening set behind an efficient attack and strong play at the net. After the set was tied at 3-3, the Broncos used a 7-1 run to take a 10-4 advantage. Elle Walker and Alexia Athans combined for six kills during the set, while the Broncos held Cal State LA to a -.028 hitting percentage.
 
The Golden Eagles responded by taking the next two sets, including a closely contested second frame. Cal State LA was ahead 19-13, but CPP answered with four consecutive points to pull within two. The Golden Eagles held on, however, before taking the third set, 25-20, after building a 15-10 lead.
 
The Broncos regained control in the fourth set, hitting .440 while limiting Cal State LA to a -.050 attack percentage. CPP broke open a 7-5 game with a 9-2 run, fueled by kills from Sarah Ybarra and Athans, followed by a pair of blocks. The Broncos extended the advantage to 20-8 before closing out the set, 25-13.
 
In the decisive fifth set, CPP jumped ahead 4-1 and maintained a steady advantage. Multiple attack errors by the Golden Eagles gave the Broncos a 10-5 lead, but Cal State LA rallied to within 14-12. On match point, Walker recorded a solo block to secure the five-set victory.
 
Walker led all players with 17 kills and hit .361, while Ybarra added 15 kills and eight digs. Athans recorded 11 kills, seven blocks, and a .320 hitting percentage. Alexia Zammit directed the offense with 43 assists, and Renee Nachtigall posted a match-high 17 digs. The Broncos finished with 14 team blocks.
