Devonte Brewer begins his first season as the head assistant coach for the Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team in 2021-22.
With more than a decade of coaching experience, Brewer comes to CPP after serving the last two seasons as the head women's basketball coach at University of the Southwest, a NAIA institution in Hobbs, New Mexico.
In two seasons at University of the Southwest, Brewer overcame challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-21, including the relocation of the Mustangs from New Mexico to Texas for the majority of the season. The Mustangs played 13 games in 17 days, finishing fourth in the conference, just missing the NAIA tournament due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols. In all, the Lady Mustangs saw six student-athletes earn All-Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) nominations in his two seasons at USW. The program also broke the school's season record in assist per game (15.1) in his first season in 2019-20.
Academically, the Lady Mustangs held a team GPA of 3.19 and boasted 16 Scholar Athletes.
Prior to being named the head women's basketball coach at USW in April 2019, Brewer spent the 2018-19 season as a graduate assistant for the USW men's basketball team. He finished that season assisting both the men's and women's programs in recruiting, game day operations, and game planning. Brewer was promoted to Associate Head Coach of the women's basketball program after the season.
Before arriving at USW in New Mexico, Brewer spent four seasons coaching high school basketball at Tartan High School in Oakdale, Minn. There he helped assist the program to two conference titles and two section runner-up finishes. He worked under a Minnesota State High School League Hall of Fame Coach in Mark Klingsporn.
In addition to his basketball coaching experience, Brewer served nine years and three months with the Minnesota Army National Guard with one deployment in 2011-12 to Kuwait and Iraq. During his tenure, he was able to graduate from the University of Northwestern in St. Paul, Minn. with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management with a minor in Business Administration and Bible. Brewer recently obtained a Master of Science degree in Education, Kinesiology and Exercise Science from USW.
Brewer will be joined in Pomona with his fiancée, Amiya Smith, and his 8-year-old son, Jayceon.
