Delanie Gearing joined the Cal Poly Pomona Department of Intercollegiate Athletics as the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications on Sept. 9, 2024.
Delanie is the primary media contact for Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Men's Basketball, and Track & Field.
Cal Poly Pomona
At CPP, Gearing works in conjunction with the Assistant AD for Communications on media coverage for CPP's 11 intercollegiate sports, including writing press releases, producing social media content, capturing photos and videos, as well as updating schedules, rosters, statistics, and historical records on broncoathletics.com. She also assists with overseeing home events, including scheduling and managing game day staff, live stats, and the production of broadcasts on FloSports. In December 2024, Gearing helped cover Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer on their way to winning the program's first national title, including writing multiple feature pieces capturing the team's historic run.
In May of 2025, Gearing was named a winner in the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest, producing the best
Season Recap in the District 8 College Division (non-D1 schools). She was also named runner-up in multiple categories for her work covering women's soccer, including
Event Coverage,
General Feature, and
Historical Feature.
Gearing actively participates in the CSC Mentorship Program as both a mentor and a mentee, a unique dual role that reflects a strong commitment to continuous learning, leadership, and meaningful community engagement.
PacWest Conference
During the Spring of 2024, Gearing worked as the Championships and Communications Intern for the PacWest Conference. In this role, she helped plan and organize the details of championships for tennis, baseball, softball, track & field, golf, and basketball, as well as assisted in the oversight of communications.
Azusa Pacific University
From 2022-2024, Gearing worked alongside the Azusa Pacific University (APU) Athletics department in a variety of roles. During this period, she was part of the Game Day Crew in which she assisted in the setup, tear down, production of live statistics, and ticketing of volleyball, acrobatics and tumbling, basketball, water polo, swimming, softball, and soccer.
In the Spring of 2023, she worked alongside the Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Affairs as an intern. In this role, she learned and assisted in a variety of tasks related to the budget, compliance, internal affairs, Title IX, and the organization APU Athletics. During this time, she also helped organize and coordinate the 2023 PacWest Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Retreat.
During the 2023-2024 academic year, Gearing worked in the APU Athletics department as a Graduate Assistant. She helped the department plan a variety of events including Midnight Madness, Night of Champions, and the All-Athlete Banquet. In the spring, Gearing acted as the interim compliance director in which she oversaw grade checks, study hall, class excusal forms, and assisted student-athletes in class scheduling for the following semester.
Education
Gearing graduated from APU in May of 2024 with a Master of Science in Physical Education with an emphasis in Sport Management. Prior to this, she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, with an emphasis in Health Professions and minors in Honors Humanities and Psychology in May of 2023.
Gearing was also a collegiate swimmer for the Cougars for 5 years and a water polo athlete during the 2022-2023 season. As a swimmer, she helped the Cougars place in the top 4 of the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference (PCSC) each season by scoring in the 100 Breaststroke, 200 Breaststroke, 500 Freestyle, 1000 Freestyle, and 200 Individual Medley. During the 2023-2024 season, she was a team captain for the swim and dive program.
Throughout her time at APU, she was recognized for her academic and athletic achievements through various awards; 2019-2023 APU Honors Scholar, 2020-2021 APU Swimming 100% Award, 2022-2023 APU Athletics Servant-Leader Award, 2023-2024 Master’s Deans List, 2023-2024 PCSC Academic First Team, and 2023-2024 APU Swim & Dive Captain Award.
