Winfield Scores 18 in Season Opener Loss to Azusa Pacific

AZUSA, Calif. – Sophomore guard Jaden Winfield scored 18 points in the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos season opener loss to the Azusa Pacific Cougars at the Cougars Classic tournament.
 
In the first half the Broncos went nine for 32 in field goals and hit six free throws. CPP grabbed 15 rebounds and five steals. Azusa Pacific expanded on an early lead as CPP closed the half down, 24-40.
 
The Broncos outscored the Cougars in the second half, 30-20. CPP was able to grind to within two points of the Cougars with the score 44-42 with 12:39 on the clock. An offensive rebound transitioned to a layup, both by Christopher Mitchell, tied the game 50-50 with less than five minutes on the game.
 
The Broncos were unable to hold off the Cougars as they fell to APU in their season opener, 60-56.
 
Leading CPP in points was Winfield who scored 18 points and had four rebounds and two assists. Mitchell also scored in double-digits adding 12 points to the board while collecting three steals, and three rebounds. Freshman guard Bam Johnson tallied nine points on the game and had two rebounds.
 
The Broncos close the Cougar Classic tomorrow as they take on Seattle Pacific at 5:00 pm in Azusa.
