Samantha Swanson of the Cal Poly Pomona women's track and field team strengthened her bid for a spot at nationals Friday as she recorded a discus throw of 152-5 at the Azusa Pacific Last Chance Meet.

"When they called out the mark, it was the greatest feeling ever and almost surreal," Swanson said. "I'm really excited about the prospect of nationals and to finally reach that level is an inspiring and exhilarating experience."

Although Swanson started the day at No. 30 on the Division II leaderboard for the discus, her throw Friday afternoon moves her into the No. 20 position. In the 2012 NCAA National Championships, 19 student-athletes earned the opportunity to compete in the discus. The official list of entries for the D-II championships will be announced Monday.

Swanson's 152-5 mark ranks as the second best in school history. The program record for the discus is 164-3, set by Brandi Gail in 1988.
