SEASIDE – Cal Poly Pomona earned a thrilling, come-from-behind victory Saturday night with its 3-2 win over CSU Monterey Bay in California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball.
The Broncos reached the midway point of the CCAA season at 5-6 in league play and 8-10 overall. The Otters dropped to 7-12, 2-9.
The Broncos fired off 61 kills in the 17-25, 25-12, 22-25, 25-22, 16-14 victory. Three players reached double figures in kills with junior Courtney Alberi leading the way with 16 kills and just two errors. She finished with a .368 attack percentage.
Teammates Elizabeth Diaz (15) and sophomore Kristin McNeese (10) kept CPP out front.
Defensively, CPP had five players with double figures in kills as senior Audrey Driscoll led with 24. Diaz added 22, freshman Kelly Bonja 16 and senior Jasmine Davis and sophomore Karissa Lagmay each had 14.
Trailing 2-1, CPP tied the match with a thrilling 25-22 Game 4 win. Tied at 20-20, Diaz delivered a kill and pushed the lead to a two-point advantage after an Otter attack error.
Freshman Taylr Kreutziger delivered a kill and the Broncos led 23-20. The Otters cut the lead to 23-22, but a Otter service error and an attack error gave CPP the win and the match was extended to a fifth game.
CPP led 11-7 after a Diaz kill, but the host Otters fought back with three straight points and the score was 11-10 CPP.
CPP remained in front and led 14-12 on a McNeese kill, but the Otters made a final stand on the strength of a pair of kills from Lauren Shacklock.
But CSUMB had an attack error and Diaz delivered the game and match-winning kill.
CPP remains on the road this week with matches at UC San Diego on Friday and at CSU East Bay on Saturday.
