HAYWARD – The 2009 Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team continues to make big-time strides of improvement.
Friday's 1-0 CCAA win over Cal State East Bay pushed the Broncos to an above .500 record for the first time since opening the season 2-0. Coach Lance Thompson's crew is 8-7-1 overall and 6-6-1 in the CCAA as it prepares for Sunday's South Region game at UC San Diego.
The Broncos earned the victory on senior Dustin Suppe's goal on a corner kick from
Miguel Abascal in the game's 70th minute and senior GK
Thomas Ryan earned his second straight shutout.
The goal was Suppe's fifth on the season, while Abascal earned his fifth assist in 2009.
Ryan needed three saves to keep CSUEB scoreless in the opening 45 minutes, and faced three corner kicks in the half.
But the Broncos struggled offensively in the first half as all five shots were not on goal.
CPP has made a habit, though, of being a second –half team and it occurred again on the CSUEB pitch.
CPP has outscored the opposition 19-4 in the second half.
Suppe had three SOG, while senior
Derek Lindsey had two. The Broncos outshot CSUEB 16-13 and six SOG.
CSUEB dropped to 1-16-0 and 0-13-0 in its inaugural CCAA season.
