HAYWARD
– Cal Poly Pomona has found success in the late-going of the 2009 season.

The Broncos earned their third straight win Friday when they shut out host Cal State East Bay 2-0 in CCAA women's soccer.

Behind goals from Mary Carroll and Callie Wilson, the Broncos improved to 9-8 overall and 5-8 in the CCAA, while CSUEB dropped to 3-11-3, 2-9-2.

CPP broke through after a scoreless first half when Carroll tapped in a rebound from seven feet in the 73rd minute. Sophomore Kailah Martin fired a shot that was deflected by Pioneers GK Nina Cefalo and Carroll pounced on the opportunity.

The goal was Carroll's fifth on the season and her 28th in her career and Martin's third assist in 2009.

Six minutes later, Wilson laced a shot from 15 yards on the ground to leave no doubt about the outcome with her first goal on the year.

Senior Nakisha Gutierrez earned the start and improved her record to 2-2 with her first shutout. She had four saves for CPP.

“We're playing well together,'' said Broncos coach Isabelle Harvey. “We've got lots of people involved and our passing is better and we're making plays.''

CPP outshot its foe 13-10 and totaled five SOG to CSUEB's four.

CPP returns to action Sunday when it faces UC San Diego in La Jolla.

With one more victory, CPP would have its most wins since 2003 when it was 10-8-1.
