POMONA – Tyler Reinhart scored his fifth goal in two games, but the second-ranked Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles were a tough team to stop as it defeated Cal Poly Pomona 2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer Sunday at Kellogg Field.
The Golden Eagles remained unbeaten this season and improved to 11-0-1 and 9-0-1 in CCAA play, while CPP saw its two-game winning streak snapped. The Broncos are now 5-6 and 3-5.
CSULA's Federico Cino put his team on the scoreboard early with a free kick in the game's 4th minute. CPP had a golden opportunity go by the wayside when Reinhart had a free look at the goal in the game's first two minutes, but kicked the ball wide of the net.
Reinhart, who established a CPP school record and a share of the CCAA record with four goals in Friday's 4-2 win over CSU Dominguez Hills, kept his hot streak alive with a goal in the 32nd minute. Teammate Sean Gurley headed up field and sent the ball over to Reinhart, who punched it in to the left side.
The teams finished the first half tied at 1-1 and the game's momentum was traded several times before CSULA got the go-ahead goal.
Cino took a shot and the ball was picked up by Jason Swope, who kicked it past Broncos GK Brad Jones in the game's 78th minute.
CSULA out-shot CPP 17-9, including a 11-5 advantage in the second half. CSULA had five SOG in the second half on Jones, while CPP fired four SOG at CSULA's Tobias Hummel.
CSULA held the advantage in corner kicks (8-1) and held CPP without a corner in the second half.
Senior Miguel Abascal had two SOG for CPP and Kevin Ramirez and Chris Trejo had the others.
The Broncos return to CCAA play Friday at San Francisco State.
