POMONA – A pair of goals from Montana State-Billings' Sam Charles made the difference Friday as the visiting Yellowjackets defeated Cal Poly Pomona 2-0 in a nonconference men's soccer game.
The loss was CPP's first on the season in three games. The Broncos are idle until Sept. 11 when they begin California Collegiate Athletic Association play at No. 6 Cal State L.A.
Charles, who holds the record for goals and points in the GNAC, put MSUB, now 3-1, on the scoreboard at the 18-minute mark on a feed from Chris Andre. Eleven minutes later, he added his second when he got tied up at the top of the box, broke out and got the ball past Broncos goalkeeper
Thomas Ryan and MSUB would go on to lead 2-0 at halftime.
“The most important part of today's game was they finished their shots,'' Broncos coach
Lance Thompson said. “You got to give them all the credit. Their keeper came up time and again and made some big-time saves.''
The Broncos fired five SOG in the first half and six in the second, but Yellowjackets' GK Matt Mitchell went on to earn the shutout.
CPP finished with 26 shots and 11 SOG, while MSUB had eight and three.
Junior
Tyler Reinhart (Fresno) totaled seven shots with five SOG and senior
Miguel Abascal (Guatemala City) had six and two.
