Broncos stopped in series opener, 9-4 at CSULA

CPP looks to end six-game losing streak Friday

LOS ANGELES
-- Junior Tyson Edwards homered and three other Broncos had two hits apiece, but it wasn't enough as they lost to Cal State L.A. 9-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association series opener Thursday night at Reeder Field.

The Broncos, now 17-17 overall and 9-12 in the CCAA face the Golden Eagles (14-16, 12-9) on Friday night with first pitch set for 6 p.m. The series finale will be at CPP on Saturday with a doubleheader that begins at 12 p.m.

Travis Taijeron's RBI-single in the first inning put CPP out front early, but the Golden Eagles grabbed the lead on Cliff Quick's run-scoring single that put CSULA ahead, 2-1 in the fourth.

After Edwards homered to lead off the fifth, CSULA resonded with three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth for a 9-3 lead through six.

Stephen Gonzalez, Robert Palmer and Manny Navarro each had two hits for the Broncos.

RHP Travis Kelly (1-2) took the loss in 5 1/3 innings. He gave up nine hits, eight runs (six earned) and struck out three with two walks.
