Box Scores: Game 1 / Game 2

Sunday NCAA Baseball Selection Show - 7 p.m. PDT

STOCKTON, Calif. -
After a wild few days of baseball, Cal Poly Pomona fell just short in its valiant attempt to capture the conference tournament crown. After defeating UC San Diego earlier on Saturday, 14-12, the Broncos fell in the finale 9-2.

Expecting some good news, CPP will await its NCAA Division II postseason fate until Sunday night at 7 p.m. when the participants are announced on NCAA.com.

The Broncos' record settles at 33-21, while UCSD improves to 41-13. It is likely that the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) champion Tritons will host the West Region Tournament starting Thursday.

Four CPP players earned a spot on the CCAA All-Tournament Team - second baseman Allen Rodarte, third baseman Humberto Tovalin, outfielder Jordan Whitman and designated hitter Tyson Edwards.

Through the Broncos' five tournament games, the team totaled 24 doubles and nine homeruns. CPP entered the week with season totals of 89 doubles and 24 homeruns.

Game 1: CPP 14, UCSD 12

The Broncos' offense got going early in Saturday's first game, staking an 11-3 lead through the first five innings. It all started with Whitman leading off the contest by knocking a homer down the leftfield line. Later in the first, Chris Miller delivered with a two-run single.

The most productive inning for CPP proved to be the fourth, when the Broncos picked up six scores. That rally featured a two-run home run from Rodarte, the first of his career.

The CPP squad extended its lead to 13-3 with two more scores in the top of the seventh but the contest was far from over. The Tritons rallied for nine runs combined in the seventh and eighth frames, bringing the margin to just two in the end.

Erick Ruvalcaba, who started the Broncos' first game at the tournament, came on in relief and threw 1.2 perfect innings to finally shut down the UCSD hitters. The CPP victory snapped the Tritons' 19-game winning streak.

Game 2: UCSD 9, CPP 2

Defense plagued CPP in game two, as the Broncos combined for four errors after committing just one through the first three games of the tournament.

The CPP offense got on the board first though, as Miller launched a two-run homerun over the fence in the opening inning.

Tritons' right-handed starter Greg Selarz settled in after that, totaling seven innings while striking out six. UCSD reliever Elias Tuma closed out the contest with two strong frames, holding the Broncos to no hits and no walks.
