TURLOCK, Calif. - Behind spectacular performances from
Jacob Deavers and
Carter Griffin, the Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field team captured conference titles in five different events Saturday, the final day of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships held on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus.
The Broncos took 1-2-3 in the 110-meter hurdles final, as Deavers took first with a national provisional qualifying time of 14.58 followed by
Matt Boudreau (15.27) and
Neil Macrorie (15.50). It was a similar story for the 400-meter hurdles, with Deavers capturing the title at 53.58 and Boudreau placing third with a mark of 55.00.
For his effort and performances, Deavers was named the CCAA Track Athlete of the Meet. Overall as a team, CPP finished in fourth place at 135 points - just 6.5 points behind second-place UC San Diego. Chico State took first with 237 points.
"The final points do not reflect how our team competed today," Broncos' head coach Troy Johnson said. "This great group of student-athletes competed for each and every point and I couldn't be prouder. To sweep an event like they did in the 110-meter hurdles was remarkable. There were plenty of great performances and everyone stepped up."
In one of its other strengths, CPP starred in the 200- and 400-meter dashes. Griffin finished first in the 400-meter race with a season-best 47.43 and second in the 200-meter (21.32) event.
Deavers and Griffin also contributed to the Broncos' sweep of the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. In the 4x100 race, CPP topped CSUC by 0.08 with Boudreau,
Corey Arnold, Griffin and Deavers racing to a 41.62 mark. In the 4x400, the Broncos again defeated the Wildcats as the same CPP group posted a time of 3:17.83.
Brian Crane posted a pair of personal bests Saturday, including a 22.30 time in the 200-meter dash and a 49.13 mark in the 400-meter race. Also in the CCAA meet,
Oliver Santiago improved his long jump and triple jump, registering distances of 21-4.25 and 43-7.25 respectively.
Vincent Huitt also had an impressive showing in Turlock, taking fifth in the discus (154-6) and 12th in the shot put (43-7). Both distances were personal bests.
Among the other significant point-getters for the Broncos included
Gustavo Cruz in the 10,000-meter run, recording a fifth-place 32:01.89 mark,
Jersain Torres placing second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:26.39),
Shane Cioni finishing fifth in the shot put (48-0.50) and
