CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field team showed plenty of early-season progress Saturday at the Rossi Relays, with the Broncos' performances highlighted by the efforts of Jacob Deavers and Matt Boudreau in the 400-meter hurdles.

The CPP squad also demonstrated steady improvement in jumps and throws, as DeVonni Terrel placed seventh in the long jump at 46-11 and Andy Durham taking fifth in the hammer throw at 158-03.

It marked the second meet of the season for the Broncos. Deavers, a senior, and Boudreau, a junior, finished 1-2 in the 400-meter hurdles with respective marks of 53.63 and 54.20. The time for Deavers is a "B" provisional qualifier by 0.27.

Competiting against top athletes from across the region, including the Trojans of USC, the Broncos' 4x100 and 4x400 relays posted matching fifth-place finishes. Aside from Durham's showing in the hammer, Nathan Schultz's sixth-place 147-0 discus throw also stood out.

Allen Black and Diego Lopez, both in their first year as Broncos, elevated their season bests in the pole vault with matching marks of 14-5.5. That height easily topped their last week performances of 13-9.25.

In the 100-meter dash Saturday, newcomers Tanner Terry and James Weiner came close to breaking into the Broncos' top-10 for the event. Terry crossed the line in 10.89 while Weiner followed close behind at 10.91.

CPP will return to action next Saturday at the Long Beach State Classic held at Cerritos College in Norwalk, Calif.
