LOS ANGELES From personal bests to a first-place finish, the Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field team put together a range of impressive performances Saturday at the Tiny Lister Classic hosted by Cal State L.A.

The largest field in meet history competed at Jesse Owens Track as warm conditions greeted the nearly 1,000 participants.

In the 110-meter hurdles event, an Olympic star raced against an NCAA Division II star. Broncos' senior Jacob Deavers placed second in a career-best 14.53 while only trailing Brian Clay, who is the reigning Olympic champion in the decathlon. Deavers' time is a "B" provisional qualifying mark and replaces his previous best of 14.58 as eighth all-time for the CPP record books.

Although Clay denied Deavers a first-place finish in the 110-meter race, the Broncos' All-American wouldn't be turned away in the 400-meter hurdles event. Deavers took first with a time of 52.62, not far off the career best he set last week at the Cal-Nevada Invite.

An Upland native, junior Shane Cioni starred in the hammer throw and shot put at Cal State L.A. this weekend. He took first in his hammer throw flight with a career-best mark of 164-5. With his 51-0.5 distance in the shot put, Cioni landed the 10th-best throw in the Broncos' record books and nearly notched a "B" provisional qualifying mark.

Freshman sprinter James Weiner posted two personal bests Saturday as he raced the 100-meter dash in 10.83 and then recorded a 21.54 mark in the 200-meter event. The Saugus, Calif., native placed second in both sections of those races. Fellow first-year Andrew Roide also turned in a PR Saturday at the Tiny Lister Classic, leaping to a height of 6-5 in the high jump.

Sophomore Oliver Santiago finished second in the triple jump after posting a 44-7 mark that improves off the previous season best he registered last week in Claremont.

The Broncos will return to action on Saturday when they compete at the Pomona Pitzer Invitational in Claremont.
