Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – Freshman
Lauren Miller chose the perfect time to collect her first career goal, netting the equalizer in the final minute of regulation to help the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team salvage a 1-1 home draw against Chico State.
Gaining that point in the standings kept the Broncos from falling into third place the South Division. At 5-3-3 overall and 3-3-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), CPP is tied for second with UC San Diego.
Up next for the Broncos will be an 11:30 a.m. home match against 25th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino. The Coyotes saw their seven-match undefeated streak come to an end Friday with a 2-1 loss at UCSD.
Just as a first-year student-athlete - Miller - gave the Broncos the equalizing score at the 89:01 mark Friday, it was a fellow freshman that initiated the scoring play.
Aleesa Gonzalez sent a long throw-in into the box, where
Alison Sauve flicked a header onto Miller for the score.
CPP finishes the regular season series with Chico State at 1-0-1 in the two matchups and the Broncos have now played overtime in six of their 11 contests this season.
Friday's match proved to be plenty frustrating for the CPP offense as the host squad outshot the Wildcats 24-11, including a 14-2 margin in the second half.
Chico got on the scoreboard first as a corner kick went into the box and the ball wasn't cleared far enough out by the Broncos. Carly Singer capitalized on the opportunity, lining a shot inside the far post to put the Wildcats ahead 1-0.
The flurry of chances piled up for CPP in the second period and less than a minute before Miller's goal, a Sauve shot hit the crossbar and deflected away.
The Broncos actually got a penalty kick chance in the second overtime period but the attempt from Gonzalez was stopped by Chico goalkeeper Brianna Furner to keep the 1-1 score intact.
