Broncos Top Warriors, 3-1, to Extend Winning Streak

Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – In spite of a slow start Saturday, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team rallied to defeat Cal State Stanislaus 3-1 as the Broncos extended their winning streak to three.

Lauren Jones led the CPP attack while Alexa Hasen put together a great all-around performance as well. The Broncos hit .257 as a team while Jones tallied a season-best mark of .500.

After Stanislaus took the first set 25-18, CPP stormed back to take the final three frames by 25-20, 25-17 and 25-21 tallies. At 5-6 in conference play, the Broncos are still just one win out of fifth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) standings.

The two teams traded points through the early portion of the opening set. The Warriors capped off a long rally with a Blair Ehrlich kill to take a 12-8 edge and tallied three more points to extend the margin to 15-8. CPP tried to chip away at the lead with Jones tallying four kills in the first set but Stanislaus picked up a 25-18 result.

The back and forth action resumed in the second set. Tied at 8-8, Jessica Doerner collected a kill to the back left of the court, then recorded a block on the next play to extend the Broncos' lead to 10-8. CPP kept its advantage through the remainder of the set and Jones finished it with a kill into the left corner to give the Broncos a result of 25-19.

Hasen elevated her level of play early in the third set. Through the first 10 points for CPP in that frame, Hasen tallied four kills and a service ace while being part of two blocks. The Broncos opened up a 13-5 lead and kept a sizeable distance throughout. CPP finished the 25-17 result with a Doerner kill through a pair of Stanislaus blockers.

The fourth set featured plenty of back and forth with multiple occasions of a tie score. Doerner knocked in a kill to tie the score at 19-19 and then added a block to give the Broncos a 20-19 lead. Jones, who tallied 14 kills in total while committing just one error, notched the match-winning point with a kill just inside the line along the right side.

Hasen delivered 13 kills and added five blocks while Zoe Herrera paced the team in digs with 15. Katie Colin and Nicoletta Stork once again provided stellar setting as the two combined for 44 assists through the four sets of play. Doerner also starred on offense, matching Jones' kill total of 14.

The Broncos will conclude their three-match homestand on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. contest against Humboldt State.
