Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team had plenty of chances to get on the board Sunday but came up empty, suffering a tough 1-0 home loss to San Francisco State.
The Broncos outshot the Gators 19-7 and put seven shots on goal. The decisive play came in the 85th minute, when SFSU sophomore Alex Palomino lined a shot into the corner of the net for the game-winning goal.
With the result, CPP falls back into fourth in the South Division and seventh overall in the
California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Except for the team's five draws, eight of the other 11 matches have ended in 1-0 results.
Senior forward
Samantha Stiles put pressure on the Gators' defense early and ended up with a team-high five shots. The Murrieta native redshirted for SFSU back in the 2009-10 academic year.
One of CPP's best chances in the opening half came in the 19th minute, when a header from
Hailey James was cleared just in front of the goal line by a Gators' defender.
At the 59:43 mark, freshman
Aleesa Gonzalez dribbled into the box along the left side and lined a shot that SFSU goalie Allison Land deflected away.
In the 78th minute, Stiles and
Alison Sauve combined with slick passes to move the ball upfield. It ended up at the feet of
Lauren Miller near the top of the box but her shot sailed just over the crossbar and the score remained 0-0 until Palimino's game-winning strike in the 85th minute. Chloe Harrington earned an assist on that Gators' goal.
Land finished with six saves while Broncos' sophomore goalkeeper
Alex Abbott tallied one stop of her own.
CPP will return to action Friday with a 7 p.m. home game against UC San Diego, a team that is three points ahead of the Broncos in the
South Division standings.
