Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – For the second-straight match, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team racked up scoring chances and outshot its opponent by a margin of 10 or more.
But for the second-straight match, the Broncos fell at home with the same, tough 1-0 result. Despite outshooting UC San Diego 18-5, CPP allowed a Tritons' goal in the 81st minute that proved to be the game winner.
With the result, the Broncos fall to 6-6-5 overall and 4-6-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CPP will now look to move past the tough Friday result as the Broncos go into Senior Day Sunday at Kellogg Field with a 2 p.m. match against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Prior to that regular season finale, CPP will honor
Tatiana Cortes,
Melissa Garcia,
Kristin Mihara,
Sarah Rohman and
Samantha Stiles.
On Friday night under the lights at Kellogg Field, the Broncos got one of their best chances late in the first half. With Mihara taking a corner kick, the ball sailed to
Alison Sauve in the box. Sauve put some strength behind a header but UCSD goalkeeper Kelcie Brodsky came up with the stop as the score stayed 0-0 into halftime.
CPP ended up with six corner kicks through the 90 minutes of action while the Tritons managed just three. The Tritons' score at the 80:04 mark didn't come off a set piece though. After the ball rattled around the box and out, Michelle Yasutake retrieved it and sent a long arcing shot over Broncos' goalkeeper
Alex Abbott.
Sauve put together a few more scoring chances before the final buzzer and one of her shots was actually cleared in front of the line by a UCSD defender to keep the 1-0 lead for the visiting squad.
The Broncos will look to finish the regular season on a high note with the Sunday home matchup against Dominguez Hills.
