Garcia Nets Golden Goal to Give Broncos Overtime Win

Box Score | HAYWARD, Calif. – When you've got a passion for soccer, sometimes you never want to stop playing.

Cal Poly Pomona has gotten plenty of extra soccer in recent weeks as the women's team has been involved in overtime through five of their nine matches so far in 2013.

The Broncos certainly aren't complaining, especially when it ends in an overtime victory like Friday's thrilling 1-0 win at Cal State East Bay.

In the 105th minute, seniors Tatiana Cortes and Melissa Garcia combined on the game-winning play. Cortes initiated it with a nice cross from the left side to Garcia, who stopped the ball, made a quick move and then lined into the bottom right side of the net. Garcia's golden goal extended CPP's undefeated streak to four games.

Earlier in that second overtime period, Cortes took two corner kicks and Garcia had a shot saved by the Pioneers' netminder. The two seniors wouldn't be denied the back of the net forever and now the Broncos take a 5-2-2 record into a Sunday showdown at nationally-ranked Cal State Stanislaus.

CPP now holds the No. 2 spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) South Division. Sunday's opponent, the Warriors, have put together a 6-0-1 record so far in conference play.

For Garcia, Friday's game winner marks her second goal of 2013 and her third career score. This was Cortes' first game this season and she made an immediate impact, playing 15 minutes and notching her first career assist as a Bronco.

CPP ended up outshooting East Bay, 18-13, and Alison Sauve collected four shots with three of those being on goal.

Broncos' sophomore goalkeeper Alex Abbott finished with three saves en route to picking up her second shutout of 2013. Abbott is now 2-0-2 this season.
