Cal Poly Pomona Dealt 3-0 Home Defeat Saturday Night

Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team suffered a 3-0 home loss Saturday to 16th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino.

Despite holding the Coyotes to an attack percentage of .135 in the third frame, the Broncos couldn't put together a late rally and fell in straight sets: 25-22, 26-24, 25-22.

After battling 12th-ranked UC San Diego in a five-set loss on Thursday, CPP returned to host another nationally-ranked opponent Saturday. With the results, the Broncos fall to 3-11 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

The first-place Coyotes remain undefeated in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action at 7-0. CSUSB's offense was led Saturday by Alexandra Torline, who collected 14 kills with a hitting percentage of .385.

Saturday's three-set match featured plenty of excitement, starting with a first set that had the Coyotes up 19-13 before Zoe Herrera served CPP into a 19-19 tie. During that run, Lauren Jones notched a couple kills before the Broncos got back-to-back blocks with Jones, Hannah Harrer and Alexa Hasen involved.

CSUSB finished the opening frame strong though and Brenna McIntosh lined in two kills to close out the three-point win in that set.

In the second frame, CPP broke a 22-22 tie with kills from Jessica Doerner and Harrer. The Coyotes stormed back though, using a 4-0 spurt to take the 26-24 result.

The visiting squad took plenty of momentum into the third set and held a 21-15 lead late in that one. The Broncos chipped away at the margin a bit but San Bernardino ended up with another 25-22 finish in the third and final frame.

CPP will have a busy week on the road next week with three matches in four days. The Broncos are in action next at Humboldt State on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. start time.
