Box Score | SEASIDE, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team fell short to No. 28 Cal State Monterey in a 7-5 loss Sunday in the Broncos' final road game of the 2013 season.
Despite a late offensive surge from CPP in the final two innings, the Otters prevailed to complete the four-game sweep of the Broncos as the visitors' playoff hopes continue to diminish.
The Broncos will now enter a bye week holding a 24-22 overall record and a 16-20 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) while the Otters improve to 30-12 overall and 22-10 in league play.
The final homestand for CPP will begin Friday, May 3 against CCAA rival Cal State East Bay, a squad that is fifth currently in the conference standings.
Sunday, May 5 will be Senior Day at Scolinos Field as
Jordan Whitman,
Nick O'Loughlin,
Kevin Bosson,
Ryan Dunn and
Donald Walter will be honored before their last regular season game in a Bronco uniform.
The Otters got ahead early in the bottom of the first inning Sunday with three runs and added another four in the bottom of the fifth. Down 7-0 in the top of the eighth, the Broncos scored two runs on a fielding error by the Otters and another three runs in the top of the ninth but it proved to be too little and too late after the Otters' early offensive effort against senior lefthander
Ryan Dunn.
Broncos' second baseman Nicholas Cooksey came off the bench with a 2-for-2 effort, including a hard-hit double to right-center, and
Donald Walter collected a double as well to go along with two runs batted in. The Broncos collected nine hits in the contest and they'll look to finish their season strong after their upcoming bye week.
