Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – Through 110 minutes of physical and gritty play, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with nationally-ranked Sonoma State on Friday night at Kellogg Field.
The result moves the Broncos into a tie for third place in the South Division as CPP's records settle at 4-2-1 overall and 2-2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The Seawolves are now No. 2 in the North Division at 5-0-2 overall and 3-0-2 through league action.
Both teams had plenty of chances and in the end, SSU put together a slight 15-12 edge in shots. Broncos' sophomore goalkeeper
Alex Abbott, making her second-consecutive start, came through with several key stops and finished with a career-high five saves.
In front of a loud crowd at Kellogg Field, the Seawolves struck first with a first-half score. Margi Osmundson sent a stellar pass up the right side for Cara Curtin, who tapped a one-touch shot past the charging netminder Abbott. It marked Curtin's sixth goal of the 2013 season.
Late in the first half, CPP had a great chance to tie the score at 1-1. Off a
Rachel Killigrew corner kick,
Lauren Miller sent a header just over the crossbar. The Seawolves took the 1-0 lead into halftime and although the Broncos have already been a part of four 1-0 results already this year, Friday's match wouldn't end that way.
CPP netted the equalizer at the 67:11 mark and it took tremendous efforts from three Broncos.
Samantha Stiles initiated the play with a fine free kick toward the upper right of the net. SSU goalkeeper Allison Hadidian made the stop but the rebound went to Broncos' junior
Allie Maxwell, who lined the ball across the goalmouth.
Senior
Melissa Garcia was there to meet it at the far post and tapped it across the line to even the score at 1-1. It marked Garcia's second career score and first since her freshman season in 2010.
Late in the second half, the Seawolves got a pair of close scoring chances - including a header just over the crossbar - but the CPP defense held strong and pushed the match into overtime. Through the two extra periods, SSU outshot the Broncos 3-1.
Once again though, CPP kept the ball from crossing the line with key contributions from
Kristin Mihara,
Hannah Leu,
Nicole Killigrew and
Megan Kisslan to add to Abbott's success at the goalkeeper position. The result snapped a three-match losing streak to the Seawolves as the last point gained by the Broncos against SSU came in a 0-0 draw during the 2010 season.
The Broncos will return to action Sunday with a 2 p.m. home match against Humboldt State.
