Box Score | POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team piled on the shots Sunday against Humboldt State but after 110 minutes played, the Broncos and Jacks walked away with a 1-1 draw.
After each team netted a first-half goal, CPP ended up outshooting the visiting squad 18-3 through the final 65 minutes of play.
One of the best chances came in the 109th minute when
Monica Quila lined a bouncing shot off the left post. It ended up transitioning into a Bronco corner kick but once again, the HSU defense held strong and the score remained 1-1.
The CPP marks settle at 4-2-2 overall and 2-2-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Competing out of the North Division, the Jacks now stand at 3-3-2 overall and 1-3-2 through league play after two draws this weekend.
The Broncos are now undefeated in their last three matches and they've gone to overtime in each of those contests.
CPP and the Jacks didn't waste any time getting the offenses going Sunday.
HSU's Lindsey Millen initiated the first scoring play as she sent a long pass that bounced slowly toward the top of the 18-yard box. As Broncos' goalkeeper
Alex Abbott charged, Colette Behen got to the ball first and flicked it softly across the goal line to put HSU ahead 1-0.
Just three minutes later, the Broncos rallied for the equalizing goal. In taking a free kick from the right corner of the field, sophomore defender
Hannah Leu struck the ball just right to send it to the far post over Jacks' netminder Kelly Lukas. Positioned perfectly was Quila, who lined in a header to even the score at 1-1. It marked the first career point for Leu and the first career goal for Quila.
The visiting HSU squad had two tremendous chances late in the first half but Abbott delivered a pair of key saves. Angel Gosse dribbled in on the left side and lined a shot from close range. Abbott turned that attempt away and also slid quickly to her left to swat away the rebound chance from Lizzie Mitchell.
The Broncos stepped up the pressure in the second half, outshooting the Jacks 12-2 in that period.
Allie Maxwell and
Indra Arteaga served as catalysts for the CPP offense and in the final mniute of the half,
Melissa Garcia got a chance from just a few yards out. Lukas posted some incredible saves for the Jacks and helped the visitors push the match into overtime, which featured more highlights from both defenses.
The Broncos return to action next weekend with road matches at Cal State East Bay and nationally-ranked Cal State Stanislaus.
