Cal Poly Pomona Defeats Dominican, 1-0, in Opener

Box Score | SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – With a steady attack and a timely first-half goal, the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team secured a 1-0 road win at Dominican in the 2013 season opener Thursday.

The Broncos' offense dominated the tempo of the game as the visitors finished with a 11-2 shot advantage and forced the Dominican goalkeeper to make seven saves.

The one attempt that couldn't be stopped was a first-half strike from Aleesa Gonzalez, a freshman defender making her collegiate debut for the Broncos. The San Jose native placed a hard shot into the back of the night from the right side of the box, putting CPP ahead 1-0 at the 40:32 mark.

Playing just 65 miles from her hometown, Gonzalez entered the match just three minutes prior to scoring the goal and finished the game with 33 minutes of action.

After playing a key role in the Broncos' 2012 postseason run, the team's back line of Kristin Mihara, Hannah Leu and Megan Kisslan turned in a stellar season-opening performance as CPP limited the Penguins to just two shots with one of those actually being on target.

The win marked the first head coaching victory for Mike Dibbini as a Bronco. Dibbini spent the past eight years at Kansas Wesleyan.

Broncos' senior goalkeeper Sarah Rohman recorded her 15th career shutout. The Santee native now has 214 saves through her CPP career, a total that ranks fourth all-time in the program's record book. At the next spot in the rankings is Vanessa Richardson, who made 229 stops with the Broncos.

CPP (1-0) will return to Southern California to play its home opener at Kellogg Field on Tuesday as the Broncos are set to host Azusa Pacific for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.
