Broncos Drop Pair of Non-Conference Matches Friday

Saturday Coyote Classic Updates: Live Stats

SAN  BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team suffered a pair of losses Friday to start the 2013 season as the Broncos fell to Harding, 3-0, and Seattle Pacific, 3-1, during day one of the Coyote Classic in San Bernardino.

The tournament features plenty of tough competition and CPP's first opponent, Harding, is receiving preseason votes just outside the top 25 after going 28-6 last year. The Broncos (0-2) will return to action for two matches on Saturday. First, CPP goes up against Central Washington at 10 a.m. and then plays Fort Lewis at 2:30 p.m. Both matches will be played in the Coyote Den.

The Broncos gave the Bison a tough test through the season opener, especially during the opening set.

CPP took an early 2-0 lead in the first frame behind a kill from Jessica Doerner and a Nicoletta Stork ace, one of three in the match. HU stole the lead away through the middle portion of the set but a 3-0 run for the Broncos gave CPP a 20-19 advantage. That spurt featured another ace from Stork while Elle Moffatt contributed a kill and a solo block.

The Bison finished the set on a 6-3 run though to capture the 25-23 result as Mollie Arnold tallied two kills in that stretch. It got a bit easier for Harding later in the match as they forced the Broncos to commit 15 errors between the final two frames after CPP made just five attacking mistakes in the first set.

Doerner finished with seven kills and two errors, maintaining an attack percentage of .250. Sophomore Tatiana Martinez made a strong debut for the Broncos, leading the team in digs with nine. CPP put together a stellar showing on the blocks with Moffatt, Lauren Jones and Alexa Hasen each collecting five block assists.

Doerner and Katie Colin, both seniors, connected multiple times in the first set of the Friday evening match against SPU. The Broncos cruised to a 25-17 victory in that opening frame and freshman Megan Byrne, appearing in her first collegiate match, added a pair of kills late in the set.

The Falcons held off CPP rallies late in sets No. 2 and No. 3 as SPU rallied to take a 2-1 advantage in sets heading into the break. At the center of the Falcons' attack was sophomore Ellie Britt, who finished the match with 18 kills and just two errors.

SPU carried that momentum into the fourth and final frame, which the Falcons captured by a 25-18 margin. Doerner ended up with 14 kills in the match to finish with 21 on the day. Colin contributed 23 assists while Stork added 19.
