CPP Earns 2nd Win of Week, Bests CSUMB

POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona secured its second win of the weekend with a victory on Saturday night against the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay, winning three of the four sets. The scores for the sets were 25-21, 21-25, 26-24, 25-22.
 
The win improves the Broncos to 8-6 overall while registering a 6-5 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). With the loss, the Otters drop to a 4-11 record thus far on the season, and a 4-7 tally in conference play.
 
In the first set, the Broncos jumped into the lead early as Nicoletta Stork served for six-straight points. The Otters managed to push their way back and at CPP's first timeout, the Broncos led by a mere point with the score at 8-7. Heading back into action, the Otters' run was snapped with a kill by Christen Williams. The set continued as the teams traded points. CSUMB then found itself on a five-point spree, which found them ahead 19-16. Not to be outdone, CPP rallied to tie the score at 21. After a few key serves by Alina Smith the Broncos won the first set 25-21.
 
A three-point run to start the second set was interrupted for the Broncos as the Otters placed a few well hit shots and the two teams began to trade the lead. The first timeout was called by CPP as they trailed the Otters 15-13 midway through the set. CSUMB managed to put together consecutive shots to extend their lead and defeat the Broncos 25-21 in the second set.
 
After a leadoff service ace by Stork, the Broncos quickly found themselves trailing as they only gained one point to the Otters' eight. A small spark was ignited for the Broncos as they found themselves on a 14-8 run which resulted in them entering the second timeout in the set tied at 16. For each of the next eight points scored, the opposition would answer with their own. CPP played and pulled ahead to win set three 26-24.
 
The fourth and final set proved to be a battle for points as neither team allowed more than a two-point deficit until the 9th point, when the Otters pulled ahead by 3. After that, more trade-offs and the Broncos entered a timeout trailing only by one with the score of the set at 17-16. Three points later the Broncos would tie it up at 18, and again 19 and 20. Soon afterwards, the Broncos made a three-point run with Tatiana Martinez serving. On a block by Hannah Harrer. the Broncos would end the set 25-22 and win the match three sets to one.
 
Alexa Hasen led the Broncos with 16 kills on 22 attacks, which is good for a .682 attack percentage, which currently lands her at fifth all time in the Bronco record book for single game attack percentage.
 
Williams added 14 kills and four blocks to her tally, while Madison May chalked up 11 kills. Jones tallied up seven kills and four blocks and Stork had three service aces on the night. Zoe Herrera amassed 16 digs, with Martinez and Deanna Blaine following at 11 and 10, respectively.
 
The Broncos will return to action Friday at Cal State Stanislaus as they take on the Warriors at 7 p.m.
