SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - After a pair of tough road losses last weekend, the Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team bounced back with a huge 3-2 win Thursday at nationally-ranked Cal State San Bernardino.
Â
The memorable match lasted two hours and 27 minutes, with just two points separating the two teams in each of the final three sets. It marked the Broncos' first win over the Coyotes since 2008 and CPP's first victory in San Bernardino since 2005.Â
Â
Four Broncos finished with double-digit kill totals Thursday to lead the offense. Junior libero
Zoe Herrera provided plenty of highlights as well. She registered two of her four service aces late in the third set and then tallied critical digs down the stretch to help CPP rally from a 12-10 deficit in the fifth frame.
Â
Nicoletta Stork and
Alina Smith led the Broncos in the setting category, combining for a total of 59 assists.
Christen Williams and
Alexa Hasen recorded six blocks apiece.
With the result, the Broncos improve to 6-5 overall and 4-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Coyotes, who entered the week at No. 8 in the top 25 national poll, fall to 8-4 overall and 5-3 in league play.
Â
Tied 1-1 in sets, the two teams traded the lead in the third frame. San Bernardino held a 24-21 advantage but CPP stormed back with five-consecutive points, including two kills from
Madison May and a pair of aces by Herrera.
The Broncos relinquished a lead of their own in the fourth as the Coyotes took that extended frame by a score of 28-26 to force a fifth set. Trailing 12-10, CPP called a timeout and then returned to the court for a
Lauren Jones kill. With the score tied 12-12, the Broncos posted back-to-back blocks before Jones delivered the match-clinching kill.Â
Jones finished with 12 kills to join
Deanna Blaine (16),
Madison May (11) and Stork (10) in double figures for that statistic. CPP will return to action Saturday with a 7 p.m. match at Humboldt State.
