Volleyball Falls in Four to Sonoma State

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team fell to the conference leading Sonoma State Seawolves on Friday 3-1. The Seawolves took the first two sets, 25-18 and 29-27. Set three saw the Broncos with the final point as they earned a score of 25-22. Despite a well-played final set, SSU took set four 28-26.

The loss moves the Broncos to a 11-8 overall tally in 2014, while owning a 9-7 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Sonoma improves to a 13-3 record in the CCAA, good for a 15-5 overall standing.

CPP was first on the board in set one as a kill from Christen Williams put up a Bronco point. The Seawolves came back with two of their own and didn't let the Broncos see the lead for the remainder of the set. SSU secured set one 25-18.

Set two saw the Seawolves leading a majority of the way through, the Broncos pulled within a point a number of times, yet were unable to even things up until the scoreboard read 21 all. The two teams traded the lead a couple of times, and the Broncos held their own until the Seawolves managed to string a few together to take set two 29-27.

In set three the Broncos showed the resilience of their squad. Despite SSU quickly gaining a 9-3 advantage, CPP battled back and evened the score at 10 apiece. The Broncos held the lead until Sonoma pulled even with them at 17 points and again at 20 and 21. CPP stayed together and earned a 25-22 victory in set three.

The fourth and final set of the night remained close throughout. The Seawolves took an early lead, but the Broncos stayed right on their tail. The score was tied up several times in the set. The two teams matched numbers at seven, 19, 21, 22, 24, 25, and 26. Unfortunately the Broncos superb effort proved fruitless as the Seawolves pulled ahead to win the set and the match 28-26.

Leading the way offensively for the Broncos were Lauren Jones and Deanna Blaine, who each registered 11 kills on the night. Alexa Hasen followed with seven of her own, and Williams and Nicoletta Stork chalked up six.

Defensively Roxanne Cardona led CPP with 17 digs to her name. Right behind her was Tatiana Martinez was 16 of her own.

The Broncos next match will be Saturday night as they take on the Gators of San Francisco State. SFSU owns an 8-8 record in conference while providing a 10-11 overall mark in 2014.
The Gators will be heading to CPP after earning a five-set victory over UC San Diego on Friday.
