SEASIDE, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team was dealt a tough loss on Friday as the Otters of Cal State Monterey Bay earned a sweep. CSUMB won the first set 25-21, the second 25-22, and the final set 25-17.
With the loss, CPP moves to an overall record of 14-10, which includes a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) tally of 12-9.
The win improves the Otters to a 9-12 mark in conference as CSUMB holds a 9-16 total on the season.
Coming out of the gate in the first set, the Otters found an early lead. They did not relinquish the lead until the Broncos matched them at 10 points. From there on, the CPP squad held the lead or a tie until the Otters earned their 20
th point, and came into the lead. The Broncos were unable to pull even again and the CSUMB squad secured the first set 25-21.
Set number two began with the Otters yet again holding the advantage for the first few points. At six, the Broncos pulled even, and a seven point run found CPP with a 11-6 lead. The opponents traded points for a while, until a few key shots brought the Otters back into contention. CSUMB pulled even with the Broncos at 20 again, and the found the lead. The Broncos tied it up at 22, however, that 22
nd point was the last the Broncos earned that set, as a 3 point spree by the Otters gave them the 25-22 victory in set two.
The Broncos were first on the board in what would be the third and final set. The CCAA competitors held a back and forth set till the scoreboard read 11-11. CSUMB found a spark from there and went on a 10-point run, that ended with the Broncos trailing 21-11. Despite a few points here and there the set and match ended with the Otters leading 25-17.
Freshman outside hitter,
Madison May earned her stripes as she led the Broncos with 15 kills in the match, she also added a couple digs and a block.
Zoe Herrera added 18 digs to her tally, giving her 422 on the year, which gives her 1,058 in Cal Poly Pomona Green and Gold, good for 6
th place in the CPP record books.
Earning 13 digs herself was
Nicoletta Stork, who also added 17 assists to the match.
Deanna Blaine collected 11 digs as well, adding the Broncos' 61 of the match.
CPP will return to action on Saturday as they play the final match of the regular season against the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
