Broncos Finish Season With 3-1 Victory

HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona volleyball team went out with a bang. Their final game of the season on Saturday resulted in a 3-1 victory over the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay. CPP cruised to a 25-15 win in set one, fought for a 27-25 victory in set two, fell 25-22 in the third set, and secured the W 25-21 in the fourth and final set.

With the win, the Broncos improve to a 15-10 overall mark on the season, which includes a 13-9 stance in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

CSUEB dropped to a 7-15 conference record, while finishing the year at 10-15 overall.

The first set started and stayed in the Broncos' favor, a service error on the Pioneers gave the CPP the first point. It was followed up by a Bronco service error, tying the game. Then a kill by Lauren Jones and the Broncos held an advantage throughout the set.

CSUEB made the Broncos work for the second set, as an early lead left the CPP squad playing catchup. It wasn't until the scoreboard head 9-8 that the Broncos held a lead. The next few points swung the CPP way, and then the Pioneers pushed back to tie it at 11. The game tied again at 12, 15, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24, and 25 before the Broncos were able to string two together as a set ending kill by Deanna Blaine gave CPP the set 27-25.

Set number three started swinging in the Broncos' favor, but a few key points by CSUEB and the Pioneers pulled even and jumped in front. The remainder of the set saw CPP playing follow the leader and the Pioneers were able to secure the third set 25-22.

In what would be the fourth and final set, the Broncos were immediately at a disadvantage as 4-straight East Bay points left CPP trailing. The Broncos answered back with 7 points of their own, and the CSUEB lead proved to be short lived. Through the rest of the match, it proved to be all in favor of the Broncos. A kill by Friday's point leader Madison May was the final nail in the Pioneers' coffin.

Blaine proved to be a strong leader for the Broncos as she registered a 15 kill, eight dig, three block, and 16.5 point performance.

Senior captain Lauren Jones tallied herself 14.5 points, which came with 12 kills, three digs, and four blocks.

Nicoletta Stork chalked up 27 assists to contribute to her season, as well as eight kills, 10 digs, and three blocks.
