POMONA, Calif. - Despite trailing by 11 points late in the second half, the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team rallied back to force overtime and ended up topping Azusa Pacific 81-78 on Saturday at Kellogg Gym.
Terrence Drisdom, who finished with a career-best 27 points, jumpstared the CPP offense with a three-pointer at the beginning of overtime. Although the Broncos shot just 58.1 percent from the free throw line in the game, they knocked down their final five attempts - two from Drisdom and three by
Rhon Mitchell - to close out the three-point victory.
CPP improves to 2-0 on the season while APU falls to 1-1 with the result. Mitchell and
Daniel Rodriguez joined Drisdom in double figures while
Barry Bell and
Jordan Faison proved to be catalysts for the offense with assist totals of six and five respectively.
Drisdom guided the Broncos' effort on defensive with five steals and he finished with a team-high 41 minutes played. Leading the visiting APU squad was Troy Leaf, who posted a double-double performance of 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Although CPP controlled the tempo for much of the first half, the Cougars closed out on an 8-0 run to take a 41-35 lead into the break.
The Broncos found themselves down 11 points with just 4:32 to play in the game. Free throws helped CPP trim the lead back to single digits and moments later, a Drisdom jumper cut the advantage to 71-67 with 2:46 left. After Faison knocked down a shot to make it a one-possession game, Drisdom dropped in a tip-in with 1:33 on the clock. For the remainder of regulation, CPP limited APU to a missed shot and a turnover to force overtime.
As part of the team's tough defensive effort, the Broncos limited the Cougars to a 2-for-8 effort from the field in the extra period.
CPP will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 22 with the conference opener against UC San Diego. The game will be played at Kellogg Gym and tipoff will be 7 p.m.
