Broncos Edged by Tritons in CCAA Opener

POMONA, Calif. – In the 2014-15 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener, the UC San Diego Tritons edged the Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team 69-66.

The Broncos saw another impressive offensive performance from Terrence Drisdom, as he put in 20 points, four assists, three steals, and a block. With two of the CPP's four three-pointers, Jordan Finn saw the most points from beyond the three-point line. Jordan Faison went 6-for-10 from the field and finished with 12 points. Barry Bell collected nine points and added two steals for the Broncos.

With the loss, the Broncos now carry a 2-1 record on the season. UCSD has registered two wins thus far in 2014-15.

CPP found itself playing catch-up through much of the first half. A three-pointer for the Tritons gave the visitors the first point of the game, and they held a lead until a tying triple from Finn pulled the Broncos even 29-29.

Following that tie, a layup from Drisdom gave CPP its first lead. For the vast majority of the remaining 2:49, the Broncos held the advantage. It wasn't until two free throws in the Tritons' favor with eight seconds left, that the opposition was able to pull even again.

Entering halftime the scored stood at 34-34. Heading into the second half, the Tritons continued on their run as they put up six points to gain a 40-34 advantage over the home squad. UCSD's largest lead came with 8:45 to play in regulation with the Tritons holding a 14-point advantage at 65-51.

The Broncos continued to battle though and after a Finn free throw stopped the UCSD run, Faison threw down a dunk on the next possession to keep the CPP momentum. It was all part of a 14-2 run for the Broncos as that spurt featured another Faison dunk along with a pair of Drisdom layups. Daniel Rodriguez and Drisdom proved to be catalysts for the CPP offense as they tallied four assists apiece.

In the final minute, the Tritons went just 2-for-6 at the free throw line and that helped the Broncos stay within striking distance. CPP had a chance to tie up the game in the final seconds but a Faison three-point attempt bounced off the front of the rim to leave the final score at 69-66.

The Broncos will continue their season on Tuesday at 7 p.m. as they partake in another non-conference bout against The Master's College. Live video and stats links are available at BroncoAthletics.com.
